Massachusetts General Hospital Phillip and Susan Ragon Building
Hospitals are among the most energy-intensive buildings. Luckily, carbon reduction strategies can lower energy use without compromising care. That's the case at MassGeneral Phillip and Susan Ragon Building, which reduces carbon emissions by 90% and meets Boston's carbon reduction goals for 2050. The design also supports myriad clinical functions while bringing an additional one million square feet to campus.
An “environment that hosts life,” the 450-bed project addresses MGH’s demand for quality healthcare with 12 levels of operation, procedural and interventional space, focused primarily on cancer and cardiac care. It also includes flexible inpatient units and operating rooms, as well as imaging, exam rooms and infusion centers—all powered by 100% renewable electricity.
Features
A connected thread—horizontally and vertically—centralizes amenities and waiting spaces with plentiful access to daylight. This central collaboration space connects the two buildings, opening new experiential possibilities for staff, patients and their families.
