Seattle Opera at the Center
Seattle, WA
Working closely with the Seattle Opera client and leadership from the Seattle Center, NBBJ’s Architecture and Landscape Architecture teams collaborated on an integrated design solution that exemplifies the Opera’s vision to create an iconic and highly sustainable amenity for the Theater District. The resulting urban landscape preserves existing mature trees, supports the functions of the Seattle Opera building and fits well within the context of the Seattle Center at large.
The site is bounded by two street edges—the busy, multi-lane Mercer Street to the north and the quieter, tree-lined 4th Street to the east. The wide dimensions of these streets provide space for stairs, terraces and gardens that share a strong connection with the project’s architecture and interior design. In addition, during the design phase, NBBJ worked closely with the local civil engineer to detail highly complex stormwater structures and a stormwater management system designed to rigorous city standards.
Features
Materials, plantings and site elements selected for the Opera were locally sourced with the charge to achieve LEED Gold status. Deployment of permeable pavements, native plantings and light touch construction methods over existing tree roots helped create this resilient landscape design.
