Jamsil Olympic Stadium Renovation
Seoul, South Korea
Stadiums and sports venues are referred to as the “cathedrals of our time,” yet their use is often limited to ticket holders and athletes. As the centerpiece of the largest integrated sports park in South Korea, the renovation of Jamsil Olympic Stadium reimagines the base as a public marketplace and pavilion. The rest of the stadium is encircled in green space, ensuring its daily use by the neighborhood, while casting the original design as a more open, engaging experience.
A treasured landmark building designed as the main stadium for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Jamsil Olympic Stadium’s recognizable design is enhanced through a series of gently sloping parks that surround the building and connect to the Han River. The open upper concourse is connected to a rooftop garden and nearby park via bridges, providing a unique fan experience with expansive views during games, and serving as a continuation of the surrounding park during the rest of the year.
