Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center New Bed Tower & Inpatient Expansion
Faced with the dual challenges of growing demand and ageing infrastructure, Atrium Health needed to reinvent its campus quickly and efficiently to deliver more effective, patient-centered care. The Carolinas Medical Center new bed tower and inpatient expansion uses prefabricated construction to reduce the construction timeline and promote room standardization and adaptability, while also prioritizing collaboration and patient experience.
The team is on track to meet the goal of prefabricating 60% of the project's building components, as measured by percentage of total construction value, streamlining the schedule and increasing quality control. This approach includes prefabricated patient rooms and adaptable head/footwall units that evolve with new technologies. The design also improves operational efficiencies while featuring more open, daylit clinical and research spaces that drive collaboration and workplace connection.
Features
The new building uses a unique open core layout—a layout that NBBJ pioneered in the early 2000s and continues to evolve—which distributes care team work areas along widened corridors within patient wings. This brings caregivers closer to patients and enables them to easily see and communicate with colleagues.
