David L. Conlan Center at Carolinas Regional Hospital Receives Lean Construction Institute Design Award
All organizations can benefit from a Lean approach to design, regardless of location or specialty. Atrium Health's David L. Conlan Center at Carolinas Regional Hospital uses prefabricated patient rooms and components with more than 60% of construction labor occurring offsite to increase collaboration while minimizing costs, schedule and waste. The project receives a 2024 Lean Construction Institute Design Award honorable mention, recognizing projects that feature outstanding design while advancing the industry through collaborative Lean project delivery.
The rehabilitation center features an open core layout that brings caregivers closer to patients, improving visibility and communication, and incorporates Universal Design principles that enable accessibility and maneuverability. Unique rehab-specific features such as forward approach, height-adjustable desks, and distance markers for walking tests, as well as motivating graphics and purposeful artwork from diverse, disabled and local artists help empower patients along their healing journey.
