Yellowhawk Tribal Center
Pendleton, OR
To create an environment focused on the health and care of its 3,200 members, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation's (CTUIR) engaged NBBJ to design the Yellowhawk Tribal Center. The Native community's dedication to the land and environment informs the landscape design and planning efforts for the center, which serves not only its community but also the natural world of which it is a part.
Drought tolerant native plantings are present throughout the courtyard, along the facade and at drop-off. In addition to biofiltration in parking lots, photovoltaic pavilions provide areas of covered parking while contributing to the power needs of the clinic as part of a net-zero initiative. Finally, the ilaxipiwit Life Garden—planted by students, tribal leaders, clinic employees and tribal members—serves as an example for other community, academic and regional medical centers encouraging health through nutritional education.
