University Medical Center New Orleans
Through hurricanes and earthquakes to pandemics and neighborhood emergencies—hospitals must serve as lifelines to their communities everyday. Yet dark, confusing facilities and aging infrastructure can overwhelm and pose threats to both patients, caregivers and visitors. Designed to offer an uplifting and inviting patient and staff experience, University Medical Center New Orleans provides a welcoming, comfortable environment for patients regardless of income while built to respond to natural and human-caused disasters.
The medical center consists of an ambulatory care building, a diagnostics and treatment building, three inpatient towers totaling 424 beds, and parking where the campus can expand in place when needed. To ease navigation and create an experiential journey for patients, visitors and staff, NBBJ’s Environmental Graphic Design team designed the hospital’s interiors with a highly visual color-coding system—including bright graphics and prints—throughout each building for wayfinding.
Features
The hospital’s environmental graphics and wayfinding features utilize vibrant colors and bold imagery from Creole culture throughout the facility. Each part of the hospital is given a unique color treatment to help patients find the right location for the services they need.
