Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital
Greenery and natural light contribute to patient healing but integrating them into healthcare environments can prove difficult due to regulations and budgetary restrictions. Envisioned as a “hospital in a garden,” the 500-bed Jiahui International Hospital—one of Shanghai’s first private hospitals—features a large, park-like central courtyard with trees, shrubbery, grasses and pathways at the heart of the project, promoting patient healing and giving the campus a true sense of place.
From design to operation, Jiahui uses best practices to serve as an internationally recognized, leading medical institution in China, providing high-quality, patient-centric and integrated healthcare services, professional training and clinical research. The campus includes an inpatient bed tower, outpatient clinics, interventional suites, an emergency department, oncology center and other specialized units.
Features
By managing stormwater on-site, the gardens also helped the project become China’s first-ever LEED HC Gold certified hospital. Additional sustainability features include a terracotta facade that reduces solar heat gain, a highly efficient central energy plant and healthy materials throughout.
