Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services
New York, NY
NYU Langone Health's Tisch Hospital needed to expand its Emergency Department (ED) but faced two major obstacles: outdated infrastructure hindered renovation, while underground Amtrak tunnels and sewer trunk lines left little space for new construction. By engaging the client in a process of collaboration and discovery, NBBJ overcame these constraints to design a multi-phase expansion and gut renovation.
The first phase of the expansion doubled the Emergency Department's capacity with a complete renovation and a new 3,400-square-foot entry pavilion, which features expanded waiting areas with separate entrances for pediatric and adult walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals. Subsequent phases include further interior renovations and a second expansion into the Kimmel Pavilion next door.
Features
The expansion has increased capacity from 18 treatment positions to 53, including exam, trauma and triage rooms, with expanded waiting areas.
