Orange County Great Park
Irvine, CA
City sports parks are urban assets, yet incremental updates over the years can result in an ununified presence and dispersed services. To enhance human connectivity and serve as a landmark destination for the community, the design of the Orange County Great Park creates a new, united recreational experience via a series of pavilions that host diverse sporting activities.
Forgoing the traditional sports park approach of independently designed buildings and stadiums, the 194-acre Orange County Great Park houses a number of comprehensive sports pavilions in one place that unite soccer, softball and baseball fields, as well as tennis and volleyball courts. The result is a connected experience with visually linked pavilions that share a unique yet similar flight-inspired design language and draw on the park’s heritage as a former military air base with themed wood patterns, painted metal and concrete textures.
Features
Soccer fans can cheer on their favorite team from the 2,506-seat Championship Soccer Stadium, which features a unique pavilion structure that offers expansive views of the game.
