NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital
Climate change is something we all must contend with, yet few communities feel its effects more strongly than those on the coasts. In 2012, Superstorm Sandy flooded Coney Island Hospital, forcing a complete evacuation and permanent closure of the facility. The new Ruth Bader Ginsburg Replacement Hospital is a resilient 11-story safety net facility designed to withstand a 500-year flood event and transform care for the community.
The hospital’s resilient design includes a four-foot concrete flood wall surrounding the perimeter, with self-rising or sliding barriers at all entrances. Mechanical systems are housed on the building’s fifth floor and the emergency room is on the second, above the worst flood projections. Meantime, the glass curtain wall is resistant to hurricane damage. The hospital is also equipped with 80 private and 60 behavioral health beds to serve more than 875,000 New Yorkers.
Features
During the building process, the hospital was once again forced to contend with unprecedented circumstances with the Covid-19 pandemic. Additional improvements were put in place to allow for flexibility in case of future pandemics or additional Covid-19 surges, such as a larger emergency department and 80 single-patient rooms that make infection control easier.
