Nickerson Gardens Playground
In the heart of the historic Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles lies Nickerson Gardens, the largest public housing development in the west. Its central playground had fallen into disrepair after years of misuse before being revitalized through a pro bono partnership between musician Flea and NBBJ.
Today, the nearly 18,000-square-foot playground features colorful misting poles and cheerful shading canopies, while a carousel, seven swings, multiple slides, climbing spaces and an outdoor adult fitness center offers a dynamic exercise experience that is sustainable and easy to maintain.
Features
The revitalized area comprises a playground, exercise area, picnic tables, and seating. Not only is the playground a place to play, but it is also a welcoming space that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities that families can be proud of.
