More than 500,000 surgical site infections are contracted in operating rooms each year. As a result, they costs the healthcare system $22,000 more per case, totaling up to more than a $1 billion each year. Worst of all, patients who contract these infections have an 11% higher chance of dying from complications than patients who do not.
As a result, NBBJ and American Shared Hospital Services have designed “Operating Room 21,” a concept that changes the air flow, lighting, temperature and technology of surgery suites to ensure infections are reduced and doctors/patients are more comfortable.
