Ryan leads NBBJ’s international healthcare practice, bringing a unique focus on enhanced clinical performance and adaptable hospital design. He is committed to ensuring that research-driven methodologies are at the center of NBBJ’s design process. Ryan has presented ideas, projects, and design research at conferences and forums across the United States and abroad.
Ryan has led the design for many of NBBJ’s most innovative healthcare projects including the Miami Valley Heart and Orthopedic Center, hailed by Building Design and Construction Magazine as “the first large-scale prefabricated hospital project in the United States”. Since then, he has continued to pioneer advanced prefabrication approaches on projects like OhioHealth’s Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus and multiple projects with Atrium Health in North Carolina. He has also helped Nationwide Children’s to transform its campus, including a first-of-its-kind pediatric behavioral health center than combines in- and outpatient research and care under one roof.
His work has been the focus of articles and interviews in The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Architectural Record, A+U, Modern Healthcare, Architect, Dezeen, Metropolis, and Inc. He has authored articles for Harvard Business Review, Healthcare Design and Becker’s Hospital Review, and he is a featured contributor on the Forbes.com Coronavirus Frontlines column. His work has garnered recognition internationally as well as nationally—including national awards from Modern Healthcare and Healthcare Design—and has been the focus of published academic research by faculty at Penn State University, Clemson University and others.
