Caring
to Connect

The Shapiro Center for Cardiovascular Medicine is a state-of-the-art, LEED-Silver-certified clinical and surgery facility for one of the nation’s leading hospitals in Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic Area.

Designed in collaboration, with NBBJ as associate architect and Cannon Design as architect of record, the 350,000-square-foot building includes 140 universal rooms, each of which can convert from conventional inpatient care to an intensive care environment. The lower levels contain offices, clinics, generous waiting areas and a conference center, while three underground levels include 12 operating rooms seamlessly connected beneath an active city street to the main surgical suites of the hospital. A pedestrian bridge connects the building to the main pedestrian spine of the original hospital campus.

The design uses a unitized curtain wall of subtly shaded metal panels and fritted glass that provides a unique pattern and generous natural light into each patient room. The architecture projects the confidence and optimism of current medical technology, while reducing the institutional nature of hospital visits with a scale that is human, warm and emphasizes patient care.
