Banner Gateway Medical Center
Healthcare franchise models can often follow a “one size fits all” design philosophy. However, the Banner Gateway Medical Center—the first roll-out facility of the Banner Health franchise model—is built around the idea of transforming the health system’s care delivery and attending to the current and future needs of growing communities. With an already-established design framework in place, NBBJ adapted the acute-care prototype to fit a community “well-care” hospital, delivering the project 16 months faster than the typical schedule for a similar healthcare facility, all without sacrificing quality.
Designed to provide the community with a place to heal, while respecting its desert environs and drawing inspiration from its natural beauty, the Banner Gateway Medical Center unites craft, quality and delivery to create a tranquil, comforting environment for patients and their families. Infrastructure and design elements were carried forward from the Banner Estrella prototype hospital in Phoenix, while key programmatic components were adapted to the more community-focused birthing and pediatric facility.
Features
The hospital’s design concept was inspired by the idea of a river canyon in a desert environment. A six-story, LED-lit glass wall, representative of a waterfall, splits the obstetrics entrance on the left with the main entrance on the right, and the design allows natural light to filter deep into the stairwells and building interior.
