Clinically
Educated

The Halim & Aida Daniel Academic & Clinical Center is the first facility in the region to focus on patient-centered care, education and research all under one roof. This is a groundbreaking step towards the realization of the medical center’s mission and fulfillment of its 2020 Vision master plan.

The American University of Beirut (AUB) is among the premier higher education and academic medical centers in the Levant and greater Middle East. The new 300,000-square-foot Halim & Aida Daniel Academic & Clinical Center (ACC) will enhance the clinical, academic and research missions for AUB and will create an environment that enables academic medicine by consolidating aspects of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing with outpatient programs all in one building.

Located on the western edge of the AUB Medical Center campus, the massing of the ACC is designed to reflect the integration of academic and clinical programs and its ties to the existing campus. One of the project goals is to usher in a new spirit of openness and “trust through transparency” for the AUB Medical Center. The open façade architecture with a travertine screen inverts the relationship of opaque to transparent materials seen in the existing buildings, while maintaining a common language through the use of travertine stone. In doing so, the screen mitigates harsh direct sunlight while maximizing daylight into the building.

The ground floor of the ACC is dedicated to public assembly and exhibition space to encourage activity and promote public visibility at the ground floor from the street. The entrances are treated in slightly different ways, with the academic entry expressed in relief within the building mass, while the clinical entry appears to slightly protrude from neighboring surfaces. Interior spaces are organized to maximize natural daylight and views, where the main patient waiting areas are oriented towards the AUB campus and the Mediterranean Sea.
