The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with its mission to help all people lead healthy and productive lives, carries great responsibility on its shoulders, both globally and locally. As a testament to its philanthropic commitment and stewardship, the foundation’s new headquarters campus proves to be a good neighbor to its downtown Seattle surroundings. The 640,000-square-foot campus is the largest LEED Platinum non-profit building in the world. The buildings are equipped with over two acres of green roofs and solar collectors that reduce energy use by 30% and saving 4,750 therms of natural gas every year. A 750-thousand-gallon water storage system minimizes energy used to cool buildings by chilling stored water at night for recirculation during the day.
